Volunteer Opportunites
Wanna help? An outreach for volunteers is underway. Please email us or contact the Centennial Committee at (619) 260-1929 with your skills and/or interests. This is a great opportunity to meet other community activists and participate in one of the many events already planned or suggest an idea that you would like to help bring to fruition. Whether it’s a little or a lot — please volunteer to make this once in a lifetime event even more special for our neighborhood. All ages, families, if you live here...or just love Hillcrest — please become involved.
Contact us at volunteer@hillcrestcentennial.com or call (619) 260-1929.
The photo below was taken in 1907 looking north of Hillcrest’s University Avenue. Fifth Avenue is at the left. William Whitson’s real estate office is outlined in red (and enlarged above). His “Hillcrest Company” sold lots from a 40-acre subdivision bordered by First to Sixth and University to Lewis. This part of a little town with a big future (then known as University Heights) had a new name — Hillcrest was born. On Thursday, August 2nd at noon a community birthday cake to celebrate our first 100 years was served at Fifth & University near the site of Whitson’s tract office by his great great granddaughter Amy Whitson and her children Alyssa and Robbie. (William Wesley Whitson’s grandson Bob and his wife Gloria were also in attendance.)
